Artist statement

When I moved away from Massachusetts, I became more aware of a deep sense of connection to the places that are a significant part of my life. These places were most often in nature, which is where I feel the most at peace and full of wonder. My paintings are a way to honor my connection to natural places and to celebrate nature, no matter where I live.

As an artist I am fascinated by how small, abstract units can come together to create a representational whole. Pared down to geometric shapes, a landscape is simplified to the point where the relationships between the shapes and colors are as much the subject as the landscape itself. It is this experience of seeing the shapes and colors in their own right as basic building blocks of art, as form, while also seeing them come together to create a recognizable landscape that is perpetually captivating to me. My aim is for the viewer to recognize the sense of connection to natural places in themselves and enjoy the interplay of the colors and abstract shapes that create a whole.
